New York City and South Pacific

We went to New York City this past Saturday to celebrate my grandma's birthday. We do this every year since its the one trip we can take and my grandma won't complain about having to travel. It really is a great time though. We take the train up to New York, have lunch, then go see a play/musical. I love these trips! I look forward to them every year. Trying out the different New York restaurants and getting to see a different play...so much fun!

This year we ate at a Brazilian place. They have a huge salad bar that has so many different types of salad. They all looked so good, but since I couldn't know for sure that they were made with pasteurized cheeses I had to pass on about half of them. For the main course, they serve all the side dishes family style and they bring out different meats through out the entire meal and they cut them for you at the table. I had chicken, lamb, sausage, about 5 different cuts of steaks, ribs, pork...the list goes on. And for dessert...creme brule!! My taste buds were in heaven.

Unfortunately, that's where the good stuff ended. We went to see South Pacific. I had never seen the movie or the play before and I had no idea what it was about either. Save yourself the money. It was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring. They sang "Enchanted Evening" or "Wonderful Evening" about 18 times throughout the entire play. Friggin' write a new song Rodgers and Hammerstein!! The acting was horrible. The lead actress thought her character was four years old and half of the time I couldn't understand a single thing anyone was saying.

Plus, I just had a problem with the story line. Okay, so maybe when this was written back in the 40s the story line made sense and people had a warped sense of right and wrong, but I didn't like it. So the lead dude tell the lead actress (love interest) he ran away from his home country because he killed someone. She's like, "Oh my! But I still love you. You wouldn't have killed him if it wasn't the right thing to do." So after a lot of boring songs and crappy dancing they get engaged. Then she finds out he has two black children to a black woman (who died)(btw, the characters are both white) and she goes off the handle crying and not loving him anymore and finally running off the stage fake crying. Ummm...so on one hand we have he killed someone and she loves him and on the other hand we have he has 2 black children and she throws that tantrum. Okay, 1940s and all, I get it, he shouldn't have been with a black woman, huge no-no back in the day. But hello! Even back then I would think killing someone would be a worse crime.

Then on another island we have a native woman who sells her only daughter to an American soldier and is all, "You like?" WTF?! So the soldier is all, "Are you scared of me?" to the daughter and the daughter is all, "Yes. No. Yes." And then throws open her shirt with a final, "No." and they do it (well, you knew after the blackout that's what was supposed to have happened) I was all like, what?! Yes, no, yes, no, do me soldier. Oh geez. Of course, they fall in love, the mother wants her daughter to marry someone else after she threw her child-like daughter at him and kept saying, "You like?" and so he dies.

Wow. I'm getting bored right now just thinking about it. Anyway, don't waste your money on that one.

Ahhh this post was hilarious.

I will definitely not see that (If I ever get to New York, that is)

I thought it was a bit slow in the beginning as well, but the farther I get into it the harder it is to put down. Philippa Gregory is a great writer. I love most of her books!

Hahahahaha! I definitely want to see it now! (not)

But seriously, I love musicals and I have had several people tell me to skip this one.

I'm glad you've had several warnings. I wish I had had them prior to Saturday.
