Obama's War in Afghanistan

You know what is really starting to get on my nerves? People who say and/or post remarks/comments to this effect:

Vote Obama! Thousands of our soldiers are dying everyday in Iraq and McCain wants to keep fighting! Thousands more will be killed if McCain is elected. Vote Obama!

Do you people not listen when Obama speaks? Seriously, though? Do you hear angels sing or do the voices in your head just suddenly start chanting his name or something when Obama speaks instead of hearing the words that are coming out of his mouth?

Maybe if you read what he has said rather than having it in the audio version, things will start to click for you:

We have seen Afghanistan worsen, deteriorate. We need more troops there...Now, what I've said is we should end this war [in Iraq] responsibly...But in 16 months we should be able to reduce our combat troops, put -- provide some relief to military families and our troops and bolster our efforts in Afghanistan...Yes, I think we need more troops...So I would send two to three additional brigades to Afghanistan.

Obama said these things during the first Presidential Debate. You can check out the script here.

Do you see where this is going?

Obama fans are under the impression that once Obama is in office, the government will stop spending money on war and bring our troops home. No.

Obama will pull the troops out of Iraq and send them to Afghanistan. Guess what? That's going to cost money as well. So all the money you peeps are complaining is being spent in Iraq will instead be spent in Afghanistan. Okay, so far Obama isn't saving us any money and he isn't bringing the troops home. In fact, you may have noticed that the situation in Afghanistan is getting more violent while the violence in Iraq is lessening. Obama is planning on sending our troops into an even more dangerous situation than what they are in now.

Are you starting to see how your argument isn't very good?

Let's look even farther down the road. Obama has also said that the Taliban and Al-Qaeda are fleeing to Pakistan from Afghanistan, so once we're finished in Afghanistan we'll have to go to Pakistan. And if Pakistan won't cooperate with us, we'll show them who is boss. Once again, this will cost money. So all the money you think Obama is going to be saving us by moving out of Iraq will be put to good use in Pakistan as well. Oh, and let's not forget who will be going into Pakistan if necessary - our troops.

So, yeah, vote Obama - the savior of our troops and military families, blah, blah, blah...

PS. Also, let's say we leave Iraq before they are fully capable of taking care of themselves, much like we did in Afghanistan, and there is an increase in violence, much like there is in Afghanistan...hmmm, I wonder what we'll do and where we'll send the troops then?

Dear Lord, THANK YOU. I am so sick of hearing "How can you possibly support McCain?? He is going to send your husband off to die in war! You should support Obama because he will bring him home!" Um..not really. He will bring him home from Iraq to send him to Afghanistan. Or Isreal. Or Pakistan.

OK I'm voting for Obama, and I listened. I support us increasing troops in Afghanistan and I know that that will mean more deployments for my family. I'm OK with that. So is my husband. I am assuming the angry post is not for Obama supporters like me then?

No, not towards you :) Just towards the people who argue that Obama is a better candidate because he's going to bring our troops home while McCain isn't. I know McCain isn't bringing our troops home anytime soon, but neither is Obama, so I think that's a poor argument.

I did use "Obama supporters" very loosely and probably stepped on some toes. I'm sorry about that. This rant is just towards those that use the aforementioned (sp?) argument.

I apologize. I've been on edge because of the conservative extremists that surround me. I'm just sick of hateful people that literally tell me I'm going to hell because I support Obama. I love politics, but I am sometimes nauseated with anger over the ugliness that's been coming out over this election. I'm really getting sick of the "Obama is biblically going to be the end of humanity" emails and arguments. Sorry, now I'm ranting. You're not hateful, btw. I'm not trying to put you in that generalization. I guess my point is that all the hateful people have sensitized me.

I agree. The whole "brig the troops home" argument is lame. I'm sick of hearing it too. Doesn't matter who's in office- the troops aren't coming home any time soon. If they're not in Iraq, they'll be somewhere else. And you're right- Obama has been clear on his position. I don't understand why some of his supporters gloss over that.

First time voter - for McCain.

I felt nauseous when voting because some parts of me are liberal and some parts conservative.

I voted for the person who outweighed the other for me personally.

I dont know...I'm kind of scared of both.

I wanted to come and post on this... (sorry) -- I know that you're being sarcastic when you say "the savior of our troops and military families" -- but he really has done a lot for our military families. I wouldn't necessarily call him a savior, but I would at least dub him "prince of freaking awesome" to our mil families.

The thing I enjoy reminding republicans and those in the military of more than *ANYTHING* is that democrats consistently outscore republicans in veterans affairs issues/military family issues. I think it's because dems seem to enjoy what I call the "warm fuzzy side" of politics, which would include families and veterans, while repubs support more of the muscle and might of defense spending and weapons systems, etc. I'm not saying that one is better than the other -- I think we need a healthy balance of both, but many veterans vote republican because they think the democrats do them an injustice, when really (in recent history, at least) democrats have done more than republicans. For a very exahustive list of members of congress, senators, legislation, how each of them voted, the final scores and the scoring rubric, check out the IAVA's congressional report card -- http://www.veteranreportcard.org/reportcard.pdf

I realized after posting my comment that I was redundant with the "members of congress" being followed by "senators" -- I am not a complete US gov't dunce!

I guess what it comes down to is which side you prefer. I would rather see the money being spent on the defense/weapons/etc side rather than on military families and vets. Not that the "warm fuzzy side" shouldn't get it's fair share, but if I have to chose a side I would go with the other side. Give more to the soldiers that are working now is the way I look at it.

I guess that's just one of the many differences of Reps v. Dems.
