I have a little Jiminey Cricket figurine hanging in my car.
I'm a pretty conscientious person. The angel on my right shoulder is about the size of Paul Bunyan and the devil on my left shoulder is about the size of Thumbelina. Needless to say Angel Bunyan wins out ALOT more than Thumbedevil. The thing is though, sometimes it's just ridiculous.
I was at Christmas Tree Shoppe's a few weeks ago. I had a bunch of things in my cart, including a wooden chest and a pack of tape rolls. I paid for everything, but when I paid I didn't take the chest out of my cart and the cashier rung it up using a handheld scanner.
I took everything out to my car and loaded up my car. Well, I realized then that the pack of tape had slid under the chest and I hadn't paid for it.
I've never intentionally shoplifted. I'll feel guilty for hours if I get home and realize the cashier didn't ring up on of the t-shirts (or whatever item) I bought. I'm definitely no saint, but shoplifting was one of those things I could never do.

So I stood in the parking lot of Christmas Tree Shoppes and debated with myself over what to do with this $1.50 roll of tape. On the one hand, I hadn't paid for it, so to toss it in my car would be stealing and I would feel guilty about that. On the other hand, it's only $1.50 and it didn't set off the sensors when I walked out the door, so even CTS wasn't worried about people stealing their tape rolls.
Then the paranoia set in. This is why I've never shoplifted. In my head, big brother is EVERY WHERE. If I shoplift THEY will see me do it and I WILL get caught. So THEY will see me take the roll of tape out of the shopping cart and stick it into one of the plastic bags.
So what did I do?
Did I just toss it in my car? Did I go back into CTS and pay for the tape?
My silly self did neither. I left the tape in the cart and put the cart in the cart return for the next customer to either pay for or steal.

That's so cute! I probably would have just thrown it into one of my bags. It's not like you intentionally did it.
Besides, stores prepare for this kind of stuff & it's not something that's going to make them go under. Stuff gets taken by small kids, a pencil there, tape or eraser here...it happens.
At least you did what felt right to you :)
I totally understand your dilemma.
It's happened to me before with a nail file that got stuck on to something in my cart. I was to scared to go back and return it though lol.
I probably would have done the same thing.
This is cute lol.. I accidently stole something once. I was shopping for my Aunty for christmas and I found a book she might like and put it under my arm.. In the meantime my Mum called and I chatted to her for ages and continued looking around.. I eventually went to look in a different store and had made it to the complete other end of the shopping center when I realised it was still there.. My devil must be bigger than yours though cause I didn't go back to pay for it cause I was scared I would get into trouble lol.. eeeep... If it makes it any better it was in the clearance section?
Haha! I think that was a good solution!
That sounds like something I would have done. PS: I love Christmas Shoppes!
at least once a month that happens to me. I figure I dont need anymore bad karma so I usually go back in to customer service, they always give me a really odd look. But hey, its not their karma now is it.
LOL!!!
I did something like that back in college. My sister and I were fighting about something in a Shoppers Drug Mart. We needed to pick up a couple of items including a nail file and a perscription. My sister kept handing me things and soon I had no space in my arms left.
Once we paid for everything and left the store the alarm went off and the lady just motioned us through. I told my sister that was weird. But by the time we came home I reached into my pocket to get my keys and there was the nail file I never paid for!
Unfortunately I never went back to pay for it but for a while afterwards I paid cash and left some change behind until I felt like I paid for it!
I'm sure I would have thrown it in the bad, especially if I had kids in the car. There have been many times that I have taken a pack of gum or something back in the store, but once I started traveling with kids, I just got lazy!
OMG that is exactly what i would have done!!!
LOL. Crack me up. I've done this twice. The first time we accidentally walked out of Best Buy with a car charger. It was beside the car seat in the buggy and I didn't even see it. I immediately took it back in. The second time happened the other day. We walked out of Walmart with a pool toy, and I felt awful. It, again, was hidden by the carseat. As I picked it up out of the cart, I looked around for cameras because, I too, feel like someone somewhere is watching at all times. It was late and I didn't want to walk all the way back into Walmart, so I kinda just... don't want to tell you. :(
lol....i know the feeling!! its like when we leave the store and i realize the kids have something in their hands that wasn't paid for. the internal struggle starts!!
