Change of Command Ceremony

This weekend was Stonewall's Change of Command Ceremony. He was being rotated out of Command.  It was a very nice ceremony. The unit presented flowers to the incoming Commander's wife and to me, which I thought was really nice. The ceremony itself was short and to the point.  Stonewall, the incoming Commander, and the Battalion Commander all gave great and (surprisingly) heartfelt speeches.  There was a point in both Stonewall's and the incoming Commander's speeches that I felt myself getting a little choked up.

I'm so glad this command is over. Actually, this was Stonewall's second command and I'm glad he's finished being in charge for a little while. This is the part of National Guard that most people really don't understand. As the commander he is on the clock 24/7. Stonewall is not AGR (active-duty), but some of his guys are, so if they need a decision made they call him. However, he does not get paid to be on the clock 24/7. He gets paid for his weekend drills and that's it. There were many, many, many days and evenings when he was providing the Army with free work. I guess when they say "all volunteer military" they mean "volunteer" quite literally.

The end of this command also means Stonewall can move forward with another Army endeavor that he's been working on for some time. I can't really share any details right now, but we're both very exciting. Wish him luck that things work out as hoped. Especially in two weeks. Two weeks from now will decide it all.

Here are some photos from the ceremony...

Lil Mootz & Stonewall hanging out before the ceremony.

Passing the guidon.

Stonewall going up to give his speech.

"Sir Mootz" wasn't working for me.  Stonewall is...Stonewall, so nix the "Sir Mootz" and go back to "Stonewall."

Good luck! And I just noticed the camo-print toga. Amazing. If there is anything I like more than an Army uniform it would be a camo toga.

Cute photos! Also, thanks for shedding some light on the guard. While OccDoc isn't in the guard, I completely understand being on call 24/7. Nothing like those 3 AM phone calls.

And I like Stonewall's nickname.

I didn't know you were NG, too! Yay! My husband is up next for the command of his unit and I have no idea what that will entail. I'm hoping it doesn’t mean that I have to be suave and sophisticated because that sounds like a tall order. One that probably won’t get filled. :) Good luck with Stonewall's next endeavors!

Congrats to Stonewall! Hopefully, he'll have more time for you and Lil Mootz now.

And - I got stuck in Japan. I was supposed to fly home, but a typhoon cancelled my flight, so I'll be staying a bit longer. In the mean time I get to play with Grace and listen to the wind roar.
