State of the Union Address: Rewarding Military Families

Last night President Bush gave his seventh annual State of the Union address. One of the subjects that he spoke about was military families. The President is asking Congress to provide more rewards and support for, not only servicemembers, but their families as well.

"Our military Families also sacrifice for America. They endure sleepless nights and the daily struggle of providing for children while a loved one is serving far from home. We have a responsibility to provide for them. So I ask you to join me in expanding their access to child care, creating new hiring preferences for military spouses across the federal government, and allowing our troops to transfer their unused education benefits to their spouses or children. Our military Families serve our nation, they inspire our nation, and tonight our nation honors them." - President George W. Bush’s State of the Union address, Jan. 28, 2008.

I like the idea of transferring unused education credits. This is something I've thought would be nice before now. Now let's see if Congress actually listens...

Sadly:

President Bush drew great applause during his State of the Union address last month when he called on Congress to allow U.S. troops to transfer their unused education benefits to family members. “Our military families serve our nation, they inspire our nation, and tonight our nation honors them,” he said.

A week later, however, when Bush submitted his $3.1 trillion federal budget to Congress, he included no funding for such an initiative, which government analysts calculate could cost $1 billion to $2 billion annually.

Well, Rome wasn't built in a day. Even though education benefits may not be in the cards for this year, there have been other benefits that family members will see this year, such as FMLA benefits when their servicemember is deployed or injured. I don't think we can be naive enough to belive everthing will happen at once, but even just a little bit at a time is considered progress.

Sorry - shouldn't have just dropped in like that. Clearly we disagree, and I should have read your post and moved on. Ciao!

Isn't that the point of a blog? To get opinions? You stated your piece, I stated mine. I apologize if I offended you with my comment, I was simply saying how I felt concerning what you wrote. I welcome all opinions and points of views as long as they are not rude or inconsiderate to me or another reader. I'm glad you wrote what you did and I hope you come back and share more opinions, even if they differ from mine. I'm all about debating (not arguing) on blogs. That's what makes them so interesting to read.
