I'm a bit confused because after watching the first presidential debate, Obama was spouting off his plans to spend more money, not cut back. The candidates were asked, "What are you going to have to give up, in terms of the priorities that you would bring as president of the United States, as a result of having to pay for the financial rescue plan?"
Obama went on to answer that there were things he would NOT give up:
- Investing in alternative energy
- Developing fuel-efficient cars of the future
- Fix the health care system
- Compete internationally in education
- Make college affordable for all
- Rebuild our infrastructure
- Broadband lines that reach into rural communities
- A new electricity grid
Yes, all of these things are important, but that wasn't the question. So far, all I've heard is that in a financial crisis Obama isn't willing to give up much. In fact, he's continuing to make plans on how to spend, spend, spend. Until Jim Lehrer coaxed an answer out of him, Obama would not mention any plans that he would give up.
McCain, on the other hand, did list several things right off the bat that he was willing to cut:
- Eliminate ethanol subsidies
- Do away with cost-plus contracts
- Do away with government agencies that don't do their jobs
McCain also said that he would support a spending freeze to try and weed out what spending was necessary and what spending was not. Obama, of course, thought a spending freeze was going to far because that would mean NOT spending money.

I noticed that too. From what I remember of the debate, I don't think Jim Lehrer was ever even able to coax a legitimate answer out of Obama on what he would "give up" in order to pay for all of his supplemental programs and his so-called "tax cuts for 95% of the population", not to mention the current economic situation.
I also think that, despite what some people may say, McCain is right on in giving up on ethanol subsidies. I've read several articles that talked about how ethanol costs at least as much energy to produce as what you can get out of it.
I completely don't understand how people can think that Obama's spending plan is going to help the economy in comparison with McCain's ideas. The only thing I can think of is that they think they're going to personally benefit somehow ("free" healthcare, welfare, etc.).
Actually, his name was supposed to be Jackson (Jack for short) until about a month ago when the dreaded MIL stepped in. Long story short, his name is now John, but Jack as the nickname. ie Jack Kennedy.
Anywho, I can't wait to hear what yall decided on!
yes...you are right. i am confused about how people constantly think Obama is more prepared than McCain to deal with economic issues...I think that just seems a little "bass-ackwards"
