The Dog Food Crisis

The grocery store has stopped carrying the dog food we normally buy.

*Sigh*

Dog food is no easy task in our household.  A couple years ago Sarge got really sick.  His protein levels spiked and the doc gave him less than a 50% chance to live.  Thank God he pulled through.  However, the vet was unable to determine what made him sick in the first place.  As a result, we have to feed him low protein dog food.  Unless we use wet dog food it's incredibly hard to find a dog food with protein below 20%.

We don't use wet dog food because it gives both of my dogs very bad diarrhea.  I'm so not dealing with that on a regular basis.

Pippy, on the other hand, is...well...fat.  She's supposed to be around 12 to 15 pounds, but she's coming in at about 20 pounds right now.  So, along with a low protein dry dog food, I also need one for weight management.

Double *sigh*

Then we have the kid to consider.  He still eats the dog food.  As much as I try to stop this habit, it still continues.  It's a never ending battle.  I figure I might as well take him into consideration as well when buying dog food.  The less inedible animal parts in the dog food the better.

Triple *sigh*

I explained this all to the gentleman at PetCo.  Well, I explained the part about the two dogs.  To which he replied, "Right now we're standing in the Lexus aisle of the dog food."

Which means...?

"The is the aisle that includes the organic, all-natural dog foods.  Less fillers, so it is better for your dogs.  Basically, humans could eat it."

I found a bag of vegetarian (for Pippy), 18% protein (for Sarge), and organic-all-natural-basically-humans-could-eat-it (for the nineteen month old human boy) dog food.

Score!

Tonight was the first night of trying out the new dog food!

None of them ate it.

Quadruple *sigh*

So in my pre-mommy life, I was (well still am but you know unemployed) a veterinary technician. My specialty is nutrition! If you ever would like to discuss food let me know! Also, try warming the food slightly. Animals like to eat food that is body temperature. You can also try mixing small amounts of a food they will eat and decrease it slowly until there is only the food you want in the bowl! Hope they eat soon!

I work for a pet food distributor. Maybe you could find out from Petco where they got it, call the distributor, and find out where else it is sold in your area. I don't think it's good to switch their food.

Ha, that sounds like a lot of fun. Not. Hope they start eating it soon!

Have you checked out Dog.com? They have just about EVERYTHING and their prices are really reasonable, sometimes better than in the stores!

Our cats had issues with the food they were being fed, so now we have to buy them this super premium food from a local pet store. In short, our cats probably eat better than we do. LOL

Have you tried asking the management of the store to stock the dog food. Sometimes if you explain the situation and your need they will try to accommodate you. It's worth a shot.

That totally sucks! One of our pups has allergies and the vet had mentioned putting Fish Oil on his food since it is a natural antihistamine (sp?). All our dogs bowl are in the same area so I put some on all their food and OMG you would have thought we were feeding them steak! They all just gobbled up there food and normally one of them just grazes throughout the day. If you have a hard time getting them to eat it try squirting a capsule of fish oil. Its natural and may even make their coats shinier ;).

My dog is fat, old, and picky (but I love her almost more than my little brother.) I spend 29320983 dollars on the best food and she doesn't really like it. If I'm feeling particularly kind I'll open up a can of green beans and drizzle a few beans/a little juice in and mix it up. That's the cheapest way...87 cents and the can will last a week if I ration it.
